JUTE (CORCHORUS OLITORIUS) : MOISTURIZING LOTION

JUTE (CORCHORUS OLITORIUS): MOISTURIZING LOTION
INTRODUCTION:
Section A. Historical Background
Excavation of Mesolithic civilization sites dating as far back as 10,000 B.C. indicate that our earliest ancestors may have rubbed oil from castor plants on their skin. Ancient Egyptian tombs opened within the last century reveal small pottery jars filled with animal fat and olive oil substances to which spices were added. Biblical accounts tell us that people living during that time considered it a luxury to have their feet washed and ointment massaged into the skin.
Lotions of the 15th century began to include ingredients that smelled good. Early recipes for cold cream included beeswax, rose water and olive oil. During the Crusades, Knights returned from battle with new essential oil scents made from flowers and spices. New lotion recipes including these oils were popular with noblewomen.
During the Middle Ages, peasant herbalists passed their knowledge of plants to their offspring, usually female. Together, they would concoct lotions designed to heal skin eruptions and other skin concerns. Comfrey leaves were widely used in these lotions and earned women a reputation of being skilled healers. Today, some medicated lotions still use comfrey leaf extract to speed wound healing, although the Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning not to put it on open wounds.
A lotion is a low- to medium-viscosity topical preparation intended for application to unbroken skin. By contrast, creams and gels have higher viscosity.

Section B. Benefits in Terms of:
B1. Human Health
Moisturizing lotion made of jute is a natural product. Jute contains vitamin A, C and E that are considered powerful antioxidants that fight age-related free radical damage to the skin. Says Bracci, "Retinoid forms of vitamin A are commonly found in skin care products. Retinol works to increase cell turnover by stimulating cell production underneath the skin, while vitamins C and E remove potentially damaging oxidizing agents." These three vitamins enhance your skin's youthful appearance, so their presence in moisturizing lotions is a natural. Vitamins are good for much more, though. Baxter explains, "Vitamin E has good penetration and doesn't leave an oily residue." Essentially, you get the benefit of soft, supple skin without the annoyance of an oily residue. The essence of jute moisturizing lotion has no side effects since it is organic.
Other synthetic moisturizers may cause a number of adverse effects, including allergic reactions to some of its components, skin irritation, contact dermatitis, characterized by redness, itching, burning, and stinging sensations, or even may cause a contrary effect to the desire, i.e. they may actually increase dehydration. For those people who have very sensitive skin homemade moisturizing lotion is the best to use to promote youthful looking skin. This moisturizer creates a protective layer on the skin's surface. Lotions are applied to external skin with bare hands, a brush, a clean cloth, cotton wool, or gauze. Many lotions, especially hand lotions and body lotions are formulated not as a medicine delivery system, but simply to smooth, re-hydrate, and soften the skin. These are particularly popular with the aging and aged demographic groups, and in the case of face usage, can also be classified as a cosmetic in many cases, and may contain fragrances.
Most lotions are oil-in-water emulsions using a substance such as cetearyl alcohol to keep the emulsion together, but water-in-oil lotions are also formulated. The key components of a skin care lotion, cream or gel emulsion (that is mixtures of oil and water) are the aqueous and oily phases, an emulgent to prevent separation of these two phases, and, if used, the drug substance or substances. A wide variety of other ingredients such as fragrances, glycerol, petroleum jelly, dyes, preservatives, proteins and stabilizing agents are commonly added to lotions. Lotions can be used for the delivery to the skin of medications such as:
Saluyot leaves are very nutritious, it is rich in calcium, iron, protein, vitamin A, C and E, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, foliate, and dietary fibers. Saluyot is usually cooked stew forming a thick slimy syrup similar to okra usually taken with rice or other starchy staple.
Saluyot can almost grow anywhere in the Philippines. It is a hardy plant that is resistant to pest and requires little care. It can be found in the wild as it also be grown in a farm. Saluyot plants are tall, reaching 2-4 meters in height, having only a few side branches.
Saluyot being rich in vitamon A can provide for good eyesight. It contains vitamin E and other antioxidants. It is said to prevent wrinkles and promote youthful looking skin. It is used to treat inflammation and pain such as arthritis, headache, stomach ache and others. Saluyot being rich in fiber and its slimy consistency when cooked is used to treat various digestive problems such as diarrhea, , dysentery, constipation and ulcers. Being rich in fiber it helps to control blood pressure, cholesterol build-up, diabetes and prevents heart disease.

  1. Related Studies
A study conducted in Department of Biochemistry and Nutrition, India reported that by  administering powdered Saluyot supplements to pregnant rats, both the mother and the fetus exhibited an increased resistance in diabetes induced oxidative stress versus a control group. The results suggest that Saluyot supplementation during pregnancy may provide beneficial effects against diabetes induced oxidative stress both for the mother and the fetus. (Journal of Diabetes. March 2013: Dietary supplementation with Ipomoea aquatica attenuates maternal and fetal oxidative stress in streptozotocin-diabetic rats)
The Department of Molecular Medicine, University of Malaya in Malaysia conducted a study on the protective action of Saluyot against thioacetamide-induced hepatotoxicity in rats to determine if Saluyot can indeed help treat jaundice. An ethanol extract of Saluyot has been administered to rats subjected to liver damage by thioacetamide. Results had shown that the rats when compared to a control group showed resistance against liver lesions, cell necrosis and inflammation. The study further suggests that the protective effect of Saluyot extract  in chemical-induced liver damage might be contributed to its modulation on detoxification enzymes and its antioxidant and free radical scavenger effects. Moreover, it confirms a scientific basis for the traditional use of Saluyot for the treatment of liver disorders. (Molecules. 2012: Ipomoea aquatica extract shows protective action against thioacetamide-induced hepatotoxicity)
